RESPIRATION

Spiracles (9 pairs in monarch butterflies) are pores open to the air and tracheae (air tubes) carry air through the body. Gas exchange occurs at the tiny ends of the tracheae. A very inefficient system which limits the size of butterflies. Spiracles are located on the abdomen and thorax.

Breathing is by a series of tubes which branch from breathing holes (spiracles) situated along the sides of the abdomen. The tubes divide and become finer as they go deeper into the body tissue and air is passed through the system of trachea and tracheoles by capillary action.
